The Goal is… No Goal!

We all have goals. Whether we sit down and define them, or whether they float around in our subconscious, we all have hopes and dreams.  In sports it is relatively easy to define a goal. A runner will want to shave a certain amount of time off of their marathon.  A figure skater can be determined to land the quad.  Or a high jumper can strive to reach a new height. These are individual goals, and in the case of team sports like baseball, soccer or hockey, the idea is to make each individual goal fit into the larger picture of the entire team’s benchmark for success.

In the case of a Hockey Goalie, the goal is pretty simple.  No Goals.  Well, realistically speaking the goal is fewer goals. Either way, taken out of context it could make it sound like goalies don’t have goals, which is just not the case.

Training for a position of Hockey Goalie requires lots of on ice practice, learning about positioning and oh, let’s not forget the up/downs. Besides on ice practice, the conditioning that a goalie brings to the rink is key to making progress. This is where Proali Dryland Goalie Training comes in. They have a program specifically designed to strengthen and quicken the reaction time of the muscles goalies use to make great saves.  The training takes place in a fun, positive environment. It’s also nice for the goalies to be with other goalies who clearly have their own place in the world, as can be witnessed by this collection of quotes from some notorious goalies.

“Goaltender is a normal job. Sure. How would you like it if at your job, every time you made the slightest mistake a little red light went on over your head and 18,000 people stood up and screamed at you?” ~ Jacques Plante, goalie

“Only a goalie can appreciate what a goalie goes through.” ~ Jacques Plante

“It’s pretty tough for a goalie when you look at it. You’re always the last line of defense. If you let a goal in you can’t go to the bench and hide between the guys or anything.” ~ Kirk McLean

“Only Dunlop has seen more rubber then I have.”Dominik Hasek

“Yes, and I also like jumping out of tall buildings.”John Vanbiesbrouck, when asked if he liked facing 51 shots in a game.

Yeah, I figure if I read enough about myself, my head will get bigger and I’ll be able to stop more shots with it.”Tim Cheveldae, when asked if he was reading about himself in the paper.

Yes, it can be argued that goalies are a unique species unto themselves, with quirks and idiosyncrasies that set them apart. One thing they all have in common however is that they share the same goal.  No Goal.
